Tagathang

Tagathang, located in the Lingsey Gram Panchayat of the Kalimpong District's Pedong Development Block, is a peaceful village at an elevation of around 1,500 meters. Although Tagathang ward extends from Jhusing at 1,300 meters to Mulkharka at 2,200 meters, the small village keeps its old name, Tagathang, which means "low-lying plain where people live" in the Lepcha language.

(Tagathang: A Serene Retreat Along Neora Valley’s Fringe)
Tagathang, a fringe settlement within Neora Valley National Park, is home to unique animals such as the lovely Red Panda and the magnificent Ward's Trogon.

The village's unique elevation nurtures two main bee species: the stingless bee, locally known as Putka, and Apis cerana indica, referred to as Ghar Mauri.

Though attempts were made to expand beekeeping to Mulkharka, these species have found their perfect habitat within Tagathang’s altitudes, making the village a true haven for bees, birds, and farm life.

Visitors can spot species like the vibrant Long-tailed Shrike, colorful Himalayan Bulbul, and occasionally the elusive Ward’s Trogon.

Tagathang's fertile soil allows for plentiful cultivation, including cardamom, millet, maize, potatoes,as well as fresh vegetables like as mustard greens, peas, cauliflower and chilies.

Talking about chilies, the village is home to sprawling farms of Red Dalle Chili, also known as Dalle Khursani, a chili pepper variety endemic to the Eastern Himalayas and regarded as one of the world's hottest. With a Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) rating of up to 350,000, it is as spicy as the habanero pepper.
